A rare print by John Smart, RSA, RSW, RA (1839-1899) of a watercolor depicting Luffness Golf Course. The original Luffness golf course was founded in 1867 and was laid out by the legendary Tom Morris -architect of many a great Scottish links. In 1894, however, they had to abandon their layout and start anew, with Tom Morris again as architect.
Original watercolours by John Smart are some of the most rare and highly prized collectibles in the golf art world. Mr. Smart produced a limited number of paintings of the great golf courses of Scotland.
Smart knew the value of such prints and only sold them from his private address in Edinburgh. Now, their rarity makes them a favorite for the golf collector.
This is one of the prints presented in John Smart’s book “Golf Greens of Scotland”. The book in which the paintings were originally compiled was the fruit of both painter John Smart and his fellow Edinburgh dweller George Aikman. The two men embarked on a nationwide tour to capture the iconic imagery of Scotland’s premier courses. Sadly, not all the courses illustrated survive today, which renders the collection of historical value.
